Everything You Should Know About Bubblers

Bubbler pipes are the perfect cross between bongs and hand pipes. They offer the size and convenience of hand pipes, with the smooth smoking experience of bongs. Altogether, they’re a great way to smoke, and usually cost just slightly more than some top of the line hand pipes - making them extremely affordable compared to other water pipes.

Most bubblers are made of glass, but there are also silicone bubblers that are emerging recently, which have been making quite the splash in the industry. Bubblers are great for anyone who is looking for something smoother than a hand pipe, but more portable than a bong.

What Are Bubblers?

Bubblers are a type of water pipe that typically stand about 6” tall, and about 3” wide at the base. They’re typically made of glass, but can also be made of silicone. They tend to have simplistic designs, and most bubblers don’t have any type of percolation other than diffusion - but some higher end bubblers have percolators and even feature diffused downstems.

They tend to take on the shape of sherlock pipes, with a long, curved mouthpiece that attaches to a large water chamber that functions as a base, where the bowl pack sits on top of. Most bubbler pipes have a rush hole to allow you to control airflow while smoking.

How Do You Smoke A Bubbler?

Bubblers are pretty straightforward to smoke, all you need to do is:

  1. Fill your bubbler with water
  2. Pack your bowl
  3. Light the bowl
  4. Inhale
  5. Take a hit and clear it

If you have smoked a hand pipe, it’s literally the same thing, just with water added to a chamber beneath the bowl pack to make things smoother.

Types of Bubblers

Over the years, bubblers have evolved to take on many shapes and forms, each designed to change the smoking experience ever so slightly for the user. Here are some of the most common types of bubbler pipes available today:

Glass Bubblers

Glass bubblers are by far the most common type of bubblers, and make up a vast majority of the products available on the market. They are known for being durable, easy to clean, and they come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.

If you’re just getting started with bubblers, and aren’t sure where to start - this is definitely your best bet. The best part is that they come in such a wide variety of shapes, designs, and sizes, that there is something out there that is just perfect for you no matter what your needs are.

Silicone Bubblers

Silicone bubblers are quickly gaining popularity due to their awesome features. To start, they’re virtually indestructible (unless you really put some effort into it), and they can easily be washed in your dishwasher. On top of that, they come in tons of cool colors and designs, and also have convenient and easily interchangeable glass bowl attachments that make them just as smooth as smoking traditional glass bubblers.

If you’re looking for a bubbler that you don’t have to worry about breaking, and that you can easily take with you on the go without worrying about the odor - this is definitely the right choice for you. Silicone bubblers are changing the game, and you should try to get your hands on one if you can!

Hammer Bubblers

Hammer bubblers are shaped like - you guessed it - a hammer. They are easily distinguished by their slanted bases, and the way they tend to sit with the mouthpiece holding most of the weight of the piece while sitting flat. These types of bubblers usually have some of the thickest glass of the other designs, and have become very popular as a result. They are durable, easy to travel with, easy to clean, and overall relatively affordable.

Sidecar Bubblers

Sidecar bubblers get their name from their shape. They have a main body, where the bowl, rush hole, and the water chamber are, then they have a neck and mouthpiece that are mounted on the side of the main body of the piece. This type of bubbler is known for having a stable base made of thick glass, and tends to be a bit smoother than the other types of bubblers without percolation because the design allows smoke to cool. This design also helps to prevent splashback.

Double Bubblers

Double bubblers actually have two chambers for water. The first one contains the bowl pack, to allow for extra filtration through the second chamber. Typically, these types of bubblers come in the traditional bubbler design. The two chambers almost make it look like a camel, and help it to have an even more stable stance when on flat surfaces. This is probably the second smoothest type of bubbler, right behind percolator bubblers.

Sherlock Bubblers

Sherlock bubblers get their name from the long, old school wooden tobacco pipe that the notorious sleuth Sherlock Holmes smokes. This type of bubbler water pipe has a very large and wide base that flows into a long and narrow neck. Most of the time, these pieces are 8+” long. This offers superior cooling, but can also make them a bit easier to break if you are not careful while smoking or in the cleaning process.

Percolator Bubblers

Percolators make smoking smoother by adding a bit of extra hardware that filters and cools smoke. These are the most expensive type of bubbler pipe, and they are also the smoothest. They can break easily if you are not careful, but are usually made with thick enough glass that they are durable over time. There are tons of different subtypes of these pipes based on the type of percolator used.

Mini Bubblers

Mini bubblers are simply smaller versions of bubblers. These are typically a bit harder to find than the other types, and generally harder to use. However, you can find a few out there that are worth the purchase if you need something that is easy to conceal, that you can take on the go, but that is still much smoother than a one hitter or a bowl.

What Kind of Bubbler is Best for You?

It all depends on what you’re looking for to be honest. If you want something that is quick and simple, perhaps a hammer or sherlock bubbler might be best for you. However, if you’re looking for something a bit more portable and durable, a mini bubbler or silicone bubbler may be best for you. Whatever you’re looking for, HelpingPot has tons of great deals on high quality brands for you to choose from.

Why You Need A Quality Bubbler

At the end of the day, you want to get the most for your money. This means that quality should be #1 for you while in the buying process. Therefore, you want to make sure you focus on purchasing a quality bubbler, and not just go for the cheapest ones you can find online. In the glass industry, there are a lot of shady, cheap knockoff products made in foreign markets that might seem like a good deal at first, but wind up breaking quickly. That’s why it’s important to focus on sourcing your bubbler from a trusted source.

3 Things to Look for in a Quality Bubbler

In order to get the most out of your bubbler, there are a things you should look for before making a purchase:

1. Solid, Thick Glass

Just like any other piece, you want to make sure that your bubbler is made of durable, thick glass. If possible, you should shoot for borosilicate glass, which is a bit more durable and resistant to cracking from rapid temperature changes.

2. Sturdy Base

Bubblers tend to be strange shapes, and can oftentimes be top-heavy, which leads to them spilling or falling over sometimes. You want to find one that has a thick, sturdy base that is wide enough to keep it from falling over.

3. No Small, Intricate Parts

When it comes to bubblers, try to stay away from ones with a lot of internal components. This isn’t to say that there aren’t some great bubblers out there with percolators. But, just watch out for ones that have tiny, intricate parts inside the water chamber - these can easily break during the cleaning process. If you do decide on a bubbler with more percolation, be sure that the internal parts are made of thick, durable glass, and be very delicate in the cleaning process.

3 Bubbler Tips: Get the Most Out of Your Bubbler

Want to get the most out of your bubbler? Of course you do! Here are some tips from the experts at HelpingPot that can help your bubbler last longer, and give you a better smoking experience.

1. Clean Your Bubbler Often

Because of the way they are designed, bubblers tend to get clogged more easily than a lot of other pieces. This isn’t a problem as long as you know how to clean it properly, and make sure you do it when needed. To learn more about the best way to clean your bubbler, check out this comprehensive guide.

2. Use Pipe Screens

If you want an easy and affordable way to keep your bubbler cleaner, we suggest using some pipe screens. Simply place them at the bottom of your bowl pack to reduce the amount of ashes that get pulled through when you’re done smoking.

3. Avoid Rapid Temperature Changes

Just like any glass piece, the worst thing you can do to bubblers is submit them to rapid temperature changes. Usually this happens when you leave them outdoors overnight, or in the cleaning process. A lot of people have the misconception that to clean your bubbler, you need hot water - which isn’t true, and all it leads to is cracks and weakened glass over time. Instead, try to fill your bubbler with room temperature water when smoking or cleaning.

The main difference between bubblers and bongs is their design. Almost everything from the shape, size, percolation, and internal parts are completely different. While they are both water pipes, bongs and bubblers are actually quite different. They work on the same principle - using water to diffuse and filter smoke, but bongs tend to be larger, smoother, and more expensive.
